Population : 22,000 – Altitude: 26 Mt - Website: www.nerja.es

Nerja is situated on the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga. The town is considered also the “capital” of the Axarquia sub regionand and is literally nestled between the sea and the mountains. On one side the Mediterranean Sea with its 16 km of beaches, and on the other the great mountain range of the Sierra Almijara.

The city, although it’s a popular tourist destination, has managed to preserve its original essence of a typical Andalusian fishing village. The old town is perfectly intact with its set of narrow, winding streets, white houses and terraces filled with geraniums and other colorful flowers.

One of the best known sights are the beautiful Nerja Caves, found just below the cliffs of Maro, and dating back millions of years. Thanks to this discover, which was made only in 1959, extremely ancient paintings were found in these caves, proving that Nerja’s area was already inhabited during the Paleolithic age.

Nerja today is a town that lives on tourism and agriculture, with avocado plantations being an important resource.
