Festivals and Food in El Rocio

Festivals in El Rocio | Food in El Rocio

La Romeria, El Rocio Pilgrimage. Huge and massive are two adjectives that fall short to describe the size of the most famous procession in Spain. It is a procession in honor of the Virgin of El Rocio, which attracts a million pilgrims from the whole peninsula, mostly from the Andalusian towns on the Huelva and Cadiz coasts; these pilgrims proceed along the dirt roads across the Doñana National Park to reach El Rocio village on the Sunday of Pentecost after days of journey on carriages, horses or on foot. During the night between Sunday and Monday, with hundreds of thousand pilgrims waiting in front of the Ermita (the big white chapel where the Virgin is kept), the Almonte brotherhood faithful literally jump over the grid that protects the church to carry the image of the Virgin in the middle of this ocean of people, showing their fervent devotion.

El Rocio is part of Almonte municipality, which cuisine is based on local products such as seafood, with shrimps, lobsters and clams being important ingredients.

Local traditional dishes include the rabbit or lamb stew and many different soups like the “marismeña” soup, or the “caldo rociero”.
