About Carboneras | Info on Carboneras

Population: 8,100 - Altitude: 10 Mt - Website: www.ayuntamientocarboneras.com

Carboneras is situated in the eastern part of the Almeria province, right on the coast at the foot of the Sierra Cabrera and at the border of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata area.
Carboneras town has 15 km of beaches, including the famous Playa de Los Muertos and the Isla de San Andrés, an island off the coast.

Because of its geographical position, Carboneras was historically suffering from the attacks of the pirates, from the time of the Moorish domination and beyond. For this reason, during the course of time the castles of San Andres and Mesa Roldán were erected, constructions which contributed to the stability and development of the town.

In the nineteenth century Carboneras became a municipality on its own, but at the turning of the century it began losing many of its inhabitants due to heavy migration.

Today Carboneras is a quaint fishing village with whitewashed houses and narrow streets which get filled with tourists during the summer.
The town hosts one of the biggest desalination plant in Europe.
