An inspiring place

AddThis

In the heart of the Alpujarras, at an altitude of 1600 meters lies a unique and inspiring place, we are talking about O Sel Ling, a Buddhist retreat center founded back in 1980 by two important lamas, and blessed by the Dalai Lama himself in 1982. This is truly a magnificent place, far away from it all, where people from all over the world, buddhists and non buddhists, come to meditate in retreat or to attend courses.

We were lucky to attend in one of these courses and the experience has been really magic, the people who joined can be described as a perfect blend of nationalities and backgrounds, from doctors to the IT guy, from librarians and students to lorry drivers and entrepreneurs, and everyone mixed in with the right mood, is impossible not to be affected by the positive vibe of this place.

O Sel Ling in Tibetan means the Place of the Clear Light, and it's easy to know why, at this altitude the scenery is spectacular, the center lies on the south face of the Sierra Nevada peak, from its small buildings you can see the villages of the Alpujarras just below, the towns of Bubion, Capileira and Pampaneira.

The history of this place is interesting, it was build as we said back in 1980, because the Dalai Lama was interested in spreading the teaching of the traditional Mahayana Buddhism in western countries. Two important lamas called Lama Zopa and Lama Yeshe spent several months traveling along these mountains before finding the right place where to build the center.

Lama Yeshe was famous for his smile and sense of humor, but he passed away in 1984, and believed to be reincarnated in 1985 in Granada, where a Spanish baby boy called Osel was born from buddhist parents, turning into one of the few recognized western Tulkus (lama reincarnations).

The story of Osel is very interesting and somehow challenging, so we better leave it for another blog… to be continued.
