The traditional music Festival of the Alpujarra. It is celebrated on the second Sunday of August in various locations throghout the Alpujarras. It’s a competition between groups performing traditional music and dances, included in the festival there is also a local food tasting tour.

Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos. It’s a festival representing the struggle between Moors forcibly converted to Christianity and Christians. It is celebrated in almost every town of the Alpujarras, on various dates which vary according to the area. The first documents regarding this traditional event are dating back to 1694.


Cuisine in the Alpujarra mainly features cured meat, especially famous is the tasty ham from Trévelez.

Las papas a la pobre, or potatoes cooked in a pan with peppers and onions; it's a simple dish and is cited several times in Chris Stewart’s best seller Driving Over Lemons, which is set in the Alpujarra region.

Also try the goat cheese, the migas (a kind of cous cous) and the puchero Gitanillo (a local soup).
